Mecklenburg County provides this weekly rundown of top stories from the Board of County Commissioners meetings and the Public Information Department’s newsroom. The Board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. The agenda will be available online and the meeting can be viewed on MeckTV.

1. Big Shots Back-to-School: Mecklenburg County Public Health is offering free back-to-school immunizations at the Big Shots Back-to-School immunization clinic. North Carolina law requires all children in the state to receive certain immunizations. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 at Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center in north Charlotte. Preregistration is preferred as it will expedite service. Public Health will mobilize two mobile units to offer drive-through immunization service. Health assessments will also be offered to attendees.

2. Your Vote Counts: It’s going to be a busy ballot for voters this year with several dates to remember before Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The portal and printable form for requesting an absentee ballot are now available on Vote.MeckNC.gov, with ballots to be mailed out beginning Sept. 6. Early voting will be Oct. 17 through Nov. 2. The Board of Elections encourages voters to check their registration status before heading out to vote. And don’t forget—voters need a photo ID to vote in North Carolina elections. Most voters can use their driver's licenses, but there are many types of accepted photo IDs. Voters without an ID can still vote with a provisional ballot. Here are 10 facts about photo ID from the N.C. Board of Elections.

3. Fall into Fall Sports: It's time to sign up your kids for fall sports with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. Soccer and flag football are now open for registration, as well as many other non-sports programs such as arts and nature. Scholarships for registration fees are available to give eligible youth the opportunity to take part in programs.

4. Everyone Out of the Pool: This weekend is the last chance for Mecklenburg County residents to splash around at one of our public outdoor pools. Labor Day closes out the summer season for Park and Recreation’s spraygrounds, Cordelia Pool, Double Oaks Aquatic Center pool, and Ramsey Creek Beach. Indoor swimming facilities will continue to operate year-round.

5. County Offices Closed: Mecklenburg County offices and services will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 for the Labor Day holiday.
