Top Stories for July 9, 2025

Mecklenburg County provides this weekly rundown of top stories from the Board of County Commissioners meetings and the Public Information Department’s newsroom. The Board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. The agenda will be available online and the meeting can be viewed on MeckTV.
1. Welcoming the NAACP: The 116th NAACP National Convention begins this week in Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County is supporting the event and welcoming attendees as a co-sponsor. The Board of County Commissioners approved the sponsorship on June 3, allocating $200,000. It allows staff to participate in the convention, attend special events, and promote Mecklenburg County as a great place to live, learn, work, and recreate. The convention runs July 12—16 and is expected to bring thousands of visitors to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Activities will include a day of service, panel discussions, awards programming, and more.
2. Bringing Business: Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s status as a financial hub strengthened this week with the announcement of investments that will create more than 750 new jobs. AssetMark Financial Holdings Inc., a wealth management advisory firm, will invest $10 million to establish an East Coast hub in Charlotte’s central business district. Their investment will create 252 new jobs. Citigroup, the global financial services company, will invest more than $16 million to establish a major office facility in Charlotte, creating 510 new jobs. Mecklenburg County’s Office of Economic Development is among the collaborators that worked to bring both projects to realization.
3. Running for Office: Candidate filing for the 2025 elections is now open. Residents wishing to run for office can file with the Mecklenburg County Board of Elections through Friday, July 18 at noon. Eligible residents can file to run for Charlotte Mayor, Charlotte City Council, the town boards of Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. The City of Charlotte primary election day is Sept. 9. The Board of Elections encourages residents who wish to vote to check their registration status and precinct locations at Vote.MeckNC.gov.
4. Fresh Veggies for Seniors: For older adults, the benefits of eating fresh and healthy include increased mental sharpness, greater resistance to illness, faster recuperation, more energy, and a more positive outlook. Mecklenburg County and the Charlotte Food Policy Council are collaborating to distribute vouchers for the N.C. Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). Eligible residents aged 60+ can receive a $50 voucher per season to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, raw honey, and fresh cut herbs from specific farmers markets. Seniors can apply to receive the vouchers at designated locations and farmers markets.
5. Park and Recreation Month: Take a walk on a greenway, hop on a bike, or knock a baseball past second to celebrate Park and Recreation Month. The Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed July as Park and Recreation Month in Mecklenburg County. For 40 years, Americans have celebrated national Park and Recreation Month to recognize the importance of parks and recreation in establishing and maintaining quality of life and for contributing to the physical, economic, and environmental well-being of communities. Visit ParkandRec.MeckNC.gov to find a park, nature preserve, or activity that’s perfect for your family during this summer vacation.
6. Crown Award: Solid Waste has been recognized by Charlotte Water for its pollution prevention efforts at the Foxhole landfill. During Charlotte Water’s annual awards banquet, the team was honored with its first ever Crown Award, presented for overall excellence for a large-scale industrial discharge system. The team also won a Platinum Award, which recognizes 100 percent compliance for preventing discharges to the sewer system from the Foxhole Landfill for at least five consecutive years. The Foxhole landfill in southern Mecklenburg County is primarily used for business and commercial disposal.
